Audition Requirements

Auditions for Valkyries/Viking/Mixed Chorus (incoming freshmen inclusive):

• Major/minor scale

• Major/minor triad

• Chromatic scale

• Clapping and counting: beamed 16^th notes and dotted quarter notes

• Sightsinging: stepwise motion, skips between do, mi, so, quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, beamed eighth notes

• Simple vocal exercises sung with the piano to determine range and tone quality

Auditions for Samohi Chorale:

• Major/minor (natural, harmonic, melodic) scale

• Major/minor triad

• Chromatic scale

• Clapping and counting: please pick up a rhythm sheet in choral classroom, must be able to demonstrate steady tempo, mixed meter, 16^th notes and rests and variations, 8^th note triplets, quarter note triplets.

• Sightsinging: pick up a sightsinging example sheet in the choir room.  Mostly stepwise motion.  Some skips with upper and lower neighbor accidentals (i.e. so, si, la     so, fi, so    mi, fi, si, la    re, di, re  etc.

• Simple vocal exercises sung with the piano to determine range and tone quality

Auditions for Madrigal and Chamber Singers

• Call back audition attendance mandatory for those students invited to a call back

• Major/minor (natural, harmonic, melodic)/whole tone scale

• Major/minor/diminished/augmented triad

• Chromatic scale

• Clapping and counting: please pick up a rhythm sheet in choral classroom, must be able to demonstrate steady tempo, mixed meter, 16^th notes and rests and variations, 8^th note triplets, quarter note triplets.

• Complex sightsinging: pick up a sightsinging example sheet in the choir room. Stepwise, multiple skips, multiple accidentals, steady tempo, correct rhythms, intonation

• Simple vocal exercises sung with the piano to determine range and tone quality
